Description
Stachys monieri ‘Hummelo’ (Betony) was awarded the prestigious title of Plant Of The Year by the Perennial Plant Association in 2019. ‘Hummelo’ also received the highest rating of 22 Stachys studied in the plant evaluation trials at Chicago Botanic Gardens in a trial from 1998-2004. Plant it in average, well-drained soil in a full sun location – though it can tolerate light afternoon shade. It needs moderate water, but once established, it can be somewhat drought-tolerant. This versatile perennial works well in small spaces, rock gardens, and containers, and can also be planted en masse in a drift or grouping, where they can gently spread by stolons to create a nice swath of color and foliage. It is rabbit and deer-resistant. Adding color, texture, and form to the perennial garden, ‘Hummelo’ is an excellent choice for a perennial bed where it blends nicely with Echinacea, Salvia, and Gaura. Stachys is native to Europe and Asia.
